Civil War

Samuel H Stevenson, 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry

The American Civil War. Apr 12, 1861 – Apr 9, 1865. The deadliest war in US History.

My great, great, great grandfather, Samuel Stevenson, fought for the union during the Civil War. He was part of the 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Battles and sieges he fought in include: Shiloh, Tennessee (April 6 and 7, 1862); Holly Springs, Mississippi (July 1, 1862); Chickasaw Bluffs, Mississippi (December 31, 1862); and the assault, siege, and capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May 19 – July 4, 1863) to name a few. He served in a total of 11 battles and sieges before the war ended.

Growing up, I was able to go with my grandparents to Shiloh and see where Sam fought as well as pay my respects to the Americans who lost their lives there that day. Our family has kept records, letters, and pictures as well as Sam’s discharge papers and reunion ribbons. I have been able to learn about this horrible loss of life and tragic piece of US history through my family’s personal accounts and records.
